Choose by joint function, not by the word interior
NFRC consumer guidance distinguishes caulk for stationary cracks from weatherstripping for movable window components. An accessible, dry interior trim-to-wall hairline gap may accept a paintable interior sealant listed for both surfaces. An exterior perimeter joint faces sunlight, rain, temperature cycling, and more movement, so it needs a product specifically listed for that exposure and substrate combination.
- Stationary gap: evaluate caulk.
- Moving sash, track, or operating edge: evaluate weatherstripping or hardware.
- Unknown slot, weep, or flashing exit: leave open until identified.
Map exposure, substrates, and expected movement
Identify both sides of the joint—such as painted wood to drywall, vinyl to masonry, or metal to trim—and whether the joint expands, vibrates, or stays sheltered. Then read the selected product's technical data for substrate compatibility, primer needs, joint dimensions, application temperature, tooling, ventilation, and cure or water-ready conditions. Do not seal designed drainage or ventilation
As this site's conservative boundary, never fill a slot or opening whose function has not been identified from the window manufacturer's information or by a qualified professional. Photograph an uncertain opening and consult the manufacturer, property manager, or a building-envelope professional rather than assuming it is an air leak.

Screen for water, rot, old paint, and hidden damage
PNNL recommends assessing bulk-water entry, condensation, rot, old paint, hazardous materials, and wiring before retrofit work. Active water entry, soft wood, swollen trim, recurrent staining, mold, or a crack that changes can indicate a larger enclosure problem. A pre-1978 painted joint that would need scraping or sanding requires a lead-safe path; suspect asbestos materials should not be disturbed.

Prepare and apply only within the product instructions
If the joint is confirmed stationary, sound, clean, dry as required, and safe, remove only loose compatible residue by a method allowed for the substrate. Masking and a small test can protect adjacent finishes. Apply the bead geometry and tooling method in the exact instructions, ventilate as directed, and protect the joint for the specified cure or weather window.
- Do not quote a universal cure time or temperature range.
- Do not apply onto damp, icy, contaminated, or moving material unless the exact label permits it.
- Keep the batch, product name, date, and conditions in the record.
Verify drainage, operation, moisture, and combustion safety
After curing, confirm the window still opens, locks, drains, and serves required egress, and that no new condensation appears. ENERGY STAR warns that air sealing can affect ventilation and natural-draft combustion appliances, so pause for qualified combustion-safety assessment where tightening could change room pressure. If water, odor, condensation, or the draft persists, do not keep layering caulk over an unresolved cause.
- Never alter a combustion appliance, flue, or intentional air opening.
- Do not continue work while a safety alarm is active; follow its instructions and emergency guidance.
- A successful surface bead is not evidence that the concealed assembly is sound.
