Find the leak before choosing a fix

A cold surface is not automatically an air leak. On a windy or cold day, close the window normally and move the back of a clean, dry hand slowly around the sash meeting rail, operable edges, lock side, and interior trim. Compare the suspect point with nearby areas and record the weather, because a repeatable localized air movement is more useful than a general feeling of chill.

  • Mark each location on a simple window sketch.
  • Note whether the joint moves when the window operates or stays fixed.
  • Do not remove trim, drill, or probe into the wall.

Use ENERGY STAR checks only when conditions are safe

ENERGY STAR describes visual and simple DIY checks for finding leaks, while DOE's consumer guide places leak detection inside a broader ventilation and safety assessment. A smoke or incense check adds flame, particles, and respiratory exposure, so skip it around combustible materials, sensitive occupants, alarms, oxygen equipment, or anywhere you cannot control the ignition source safely. If those conditions are not met, use visual and touch observations only rather than improvising another test.

  • Never use an open flame to trace a draft.
  • Never use a blower door or powerful exhaust fan as a beginner diagnostic.
  • Keep fingers and loose material clear of hinges and closing sashes.

Classify the joint before selecting material

Weatherstripping is intended for operable joints that must continue to move; caulk is generally for accessible stationary cracks. A draft at the sash edge therefore points first to worn, missing, or poorly compressed weatherstripping, while a narrow dry gap between interior trim and wall may be a stationary surface-seal candidate. Leakage that seems to come from behind trim is not proof that a cosmetic bead on the visible edge will reach the real path.

  • Moving sash or door edge: inspect the existing weatherstrip and operation.
  • Stationary trim-to-wall gap: check whether the chosen caulk lists both substrates.
  • Weep hole, drainage slot, vent, or hardware path: do not seal it.

Screen moisture, material, and enclosure red flags

PNNL's pre-retrofit guidance calls for checking bulk-water entry, condensation, rot, old paint, suspect asbestos, wiring, and other enclosure conditions before sealing. Stop if the surface is wet or soft, water stains are growing, glass is cracked, wiring is damaged, mold appears extensive or hidden, or a painted pre-1978 surface would need scraping. Suspect asbestos cannot be identified by sight; do not disturb old texture or other suspect material.

  • A water leak needs its source corrected, not a bead placed over the symptom.
  • Cracked glass or unexplained moisture is outside this surface air-leak check.
  • Rot or movement calls for a window or building-envelope professional.

Check combustion and ventilation before tightening the room

ENERGY STAR warns that air sealing can trap pollutants or contribute to backdrafting of natural-draft fuel-burning appliances. If the room or connected zone contains a natural-draft furnace, boiler, water heater, fireplace, or another combustion appliance, pause before sealing changes airflow and arrange a qualified home-energy or HVAC professional's combustion-safety assessment. Do not block an intentional combustion-air opening, alter venting, or judge safety from flame color.

  • Keep installed safety alarms and ventilation equipment in service as directed.
  • Do not continue sealing while any safety alarm is active; follow the alarm instructions and emergency guidance.
  • Never disable exhaust or an alarm to make a sealing project seem successful.

Create a leak map and verify one change at a time

Photograph the full window and each marked point, label moving versus fixed joints, and note indoor/outdoor conditions. If no red flag is present, make only one reversible, label-compliant change, then repeat the same observation under similar conditions. The result is a practical leak map for choosing weatherstrip, removable film, a compatible surface caulk, or professional assessment without assuming every draft has the same cause.

  • Record product name, lot if available, application conditions, and date.
  • Confirm the window still locks, opens, and drains normally.
  • If the draft persists or moves, stop adding material and reassess the path.
