Do not answer condensation with more sealant
Condensation forms when moist indoor air meets a sufficiently cold surface. After air sealing, the balance among indoor moisture, surface temperature, and ventilation may have changed, so first record whether water is on the room-side surface or appears after rain. Caulking over wet trim or mold can hide damage and does not identify the source.

Build a short moisture log
PNNL advises evaluating condensation together with moisture-producing activities and exhaust ventilation. Photograph wide context and close-ups without removing trim or opening finished surfaces.

Follow appliance and fan instructions, keep grilles unobstructed, and do not route moisture into an attic or wall. Do not use an unvented combustion heater as a drying method.

Screen mold, hidden wetting, and contaminated water
EPA advises against painting or caulking moldy surfaces and recommends professional help for larger, hidden, recurrent, or contaminated-water problems. Stop if drywall is wet or bulging, wood is soft, mold is extensive or hidden, sewage is involved, or condensation appears inside a wall or ceiling cavity. Occupant health concerns also justify professional guidance.

Treat combustion safety as a separate gate
ENERGY STAR warns that tighter homes may need mechanical ventilation and that sealing can contribute to backdrafting of natural-draft appliances. If a furnace, boiler, water heater, fireplace, or other combustion appliance serves the affected zone, arrange qualified combustion-safety evaluation rather than adjusting vents or equipment. CPSC and CDC guidance makes a CO alarm or possible symptoms an emergency, not a condensation experiment.
- If a CO alarm sounds or occupants may have CO symptoms, leave for fresh air and contact emergency services.
- Never disable an alarm, block a vent, or inspect a flue internally.

Decide whether to monitor, ventilate, or refer
A brief, explained room-side pattern that improves when moisture sources and existing exhaust are managed can be monitored with the same log. Persistent daily wetting, worsening condensation after sealing, recurrent mold, unknown water source, or any concealed moisture requires an indoor-air, building-envelope, or window professional as appropriate. Verify that windows still drain and operate; under this site's conservative policy, do not obstruct a window designated for emergency escape.
